The Spinal Cord

Illustration of the Spinal Cord

The spinal cord serves as the communications system between the brain and the body, relaying messages between the two and enabling humans to move and feel sensations. The spinal cord and the brain cord make up the central nervous system (CNS).

This 18-inch-long cord runs from the base of the brain all the way down to just below the last rib around the waist area.
