How To Prepare for Image Guided Brain Surgery

In the days leading up to your brain surgery, you can prepare many things in advance to lessen stress and to make the day go as smoothly as possible.

Make sure you and your surgeon or nurse have covered and understand any important steps you need to take the week prior to surgery:

  • Ask your doctor which drugs you should take on the day of your brain surgery; you may be asked to stop using aspirin, ibuprofen, or any other medication that may make it difficult for your blood to clot
  • It is helpful to stop smoking; if you need assistance with this, ask your doctor for help
  • You may be required to use a special shampoo the night before your surgery

It is helpful to have a pre-packed bag for your hospital stay. Some items to pack are:

  • Comfortable lounging clothes from home; clothes that button down the front may be easier to take off and on since your head will be in bandages
  • A pair of socks
  • A lightweight robe
  • Eyeglasses, hearing aids, dentures or any other item you may need after surgery
  • Personal toiletries such as toothbrush and toothpaste, soup, body lotion, and deodorant; the hospital may provide these items, but you may find it more comfortable to use your own personal items
  • Shower cap, in case you are able to take a shower
  • Pillowcase from home
  • Book or magazine for light reading
  • A watch, in case your room doesn’t have a clock
  • Relaxing music

Remember to allow time for relaxing. This can be a very stressful time, so making plans with family and friends can help you stay calm and relaxed.
